Start with the receiving instructions, not the cheapest withdrawal fee. The sending service must use a network and token version that the recipient accepts. “USDT” identifies the asset; it does not, by itself, tell you which blockchain to use.
Tether publishes USD₮ across multiple protocols. Its official protocol and contract list identifies issuer-supported versions; it is not a list of networks supported by your particular exchange or recipient. Check both separately.
The pre-transfer checklist
- Open the recipient’s current receive or deposit screen. Select USDT and read the supported network. If another person is receiving, confirm the asset and network with them through a channel you trust. Do not infer support from an old screenshot.
- Match the network at the sending end. If the receiving instructions specify Ethereum, choosing a different chain because it costs less is not an equivalent transfer. If the required route is unavailable or suspended, stop and confirm an alternative with the recipient.
- Match the token version as well. A familiar ticker or logo is not enough. For a self-custody token, check its contract on the intended chain against the issuer’s official reference. A bridged or wrapped version needs explicit receiving-side support.
- Use the actual recipient address. Copy it from the verified receiving instructions and compare the full pasted value before confirming. A token contract address identifies the token; it is not your personal exchange deposit address. Include additional routing information only where the receiving instructions require it.
- Check the amount that will arrive. Read the withdrawal preview, deductions and any deposit minimum. A test transfer below the minimum may not be credited. Do not use a universal “send one dollar first” rule.
- Review the final confirmation screen. Check asset, network, address, amount and fees together. If a small test is appropriate, make it large enough to satisfy the recipient’s rules and confirm it is credited before considering the remainder. A successful test does not guarantee later transfers.
These checks combine the issuer’s protocol reference with the receiving-side checks illustrated in Kraken’s deposit instructions and deposit-minimum guidance. Use your own service’s current instructions; this is not a claim that every service accepts the same routes.
Why the same address can still be the wrong network
Ethereum and many EVM-compatible networks use the same address format. A self-custody account may even display the same address on different chains. That does not merge their balances or prove an exchange supports deposits on all of them. MetaMask explains this shared address format.

For example, suppose a recipient explicitly accepts USDT on Ethereum only. Selecting BNB Smart Chain at the sender does not satisfy that instruction, even if the address text matches. This is a compatibility example, not a statement about any named exchange’s current support.
Separate withdrawal charges from network gas
An exchange withdrawal preview is the relevant starting point when an exchange is sending for you. For a conventional self-custody token transfer, the wallet instead needs the chain’s fee resource—normally its native token, such as ETH on Ethereum. Wallet-sponsored or alternative fee arrangements can differ; follow the actual wallet preview. See MetaMask’s sending guidance.
Here is a hypothetical minimum-deposit problem: the recipient requires 10 USDT, and the sender deducts a 1 USDT withdrawal charge from a 10 USDT request. Only 9 USDT is expected to arrive. That is below the stated minimum. The numbers are illustrative; real minimums and fees vary by asset and route.

If the transfer is already on the wrong network
Do not send a second transfer to “unlock” the first. Keep the transaction hash, chain used, asset, amount, destination and time. Contact the receiving service through its official app or help centre. Recovery depends on its control of the destination and its procedures; fees may apply and recovery is not assured. Kraken’s recovery policy describes these limitations.
A guide cannot establish who controls a destination or reverse a transaction. Do not share a seed phrase with anyone offering recovery, and do not import keys into a website linked by a stranger.
