A quote fee adds to cash spent; a coin fee reduces coins received. Enter 0 for no fee. Do not enter an already-net quantity and deduct the same fee again.

02 Separate price from cost

Buy-only spot model. No sales history, tax lots, third-token fees, transfers, funding or derivatives settlement rules. A lower average price is not a recommendation to buy more.

Average entry is weighted by how much you bought

Three purchase prices do not necessarily deserve equal weight. Buying a small amount at a high price and a larger amount at a low price puts the average closer to the lower price. The fee-free calculation is:

Weighted average entry = Σ(Price × Gross quantity) ÷ Σ(Gross quantity)

The same quantity-weighted relationship appears in Bybit’s linear-contract entry-price documentation. That page also describes other contract conventions; this calculator is intentionally limited to spot purchases, not a replica of a derivatives account.

Worked example: unequal purchases

The purchases total 1 ETH and 2,640 USDT before fees, so the weighted entry is 2,640 USDT per ETH. Averaging just the three prices gives about 2,733.33 instead. That unweighted answer ignores the larger second purchase.

Why the fee currency matters

A buy fee can increase the quote currency spent or reduce the purchased coins received. Kraken’s fee documentation distinguishes quote- and base-currency fees. Bybit’s spot-cost example shows a fee reducing net coin quantity. Use your actual fill record; the 0.1% defaults here are illustrative, not an exchange fee quote.

Quote-fee buy: Cost = Price × Quantity × (1 + Fee / 100)

Coin-fee buy: Net quantity = Quantity × (1 − Fee / 100)

Cost per net coin = Total quote spent ÷ Total net coins received

With a 0.1% quote fee on each purchase above, buy fees total 2.64 USDT. Total spending becomes 2,642.64 USDT, while quantity stays at 1 ETH. The fill average is still 2,640; the cost per net coin is 2,642.64.

For a separate example, buying 1 ETH at 2,000 USDT with a 0.1% coin fee leaves 0.999 ETH. Spending stays at 2,000 USDT, but cost per received ETH becomes about 2,002.002. Do not add that same fee to cash spending as well: the reduced quantity already accounts for it.

Break-even includes the assumed sell fee

The exit estimate assumes selling all net coins at one price, with a fee deducted from quote proceeds:

Break-even exit price = Total quote spent ÷ [Net coin quantity × (1 − Sell fee / 100)]

Using 2,642.64 USDT of spending, 1 ETH and a 0.1% sell fee gives an estimated exit of 2,645.285285… USDT per ETH. At that theoretical price, proceeds after the assumed fee equal the amount spent. A rounded displayed price, exchange tick size or slippage can change the actual outcome.

Can this track DCA or an average-down purchase?

It can combine the actual fills from repeated purchases, or a clearly hypothetical additional buy. It does not fetch past prices, simulate a recurring purchase schedule or predict returns. A lower average entry can come with a larger total amount at risk; the number alone is not a reason to add to a losing position.

Keep the scope of the worksheet clear

  • Enter one purchased coin and one quote currency. Labels do not perform currency conversion.
  • All entered buys are assumed still held. Sales, transfers, rewards and changes in remaining holdings require separate accounting.
  • Enter gross filled quantity when applying a coin fee. If only net received quantity is known, reconstruct the gross fill from your record or avoid applying the same fee twice.
  • Fees paid in a third token, rebates, fixed/minimum fees, taxes and exchange rounding are not modelled.
  • This is an economic purchase-cost estimate, not tax-lot, FIFO, LIFO or realized-gain accounting.
